KTM 950R SE Tyre thread.

Tyre reviews and tyre questions, post it up here!

To Kick off....

For our trip to Morroco I used a set of Michelin Deserts: http://moto.michelin.co.uk/GB/en/tyres/ ... -race.html

Front 90/90 -21 54R: This is a great tyre on the dirt, sand or mud but its a real freak show on tarmac. When it's new just feels like it wants to wash out but bed's in after 600 miles but still you can feel it. Tyre wear is excellent and even after 2k miles of mixed riding there is plenty left. Michelen state 'MICHELIN Desert Race tyres ensure excellent stability at high speeds.' Maybe off road but on tarmac the front is a nightmare....

Rear 140/80 -18 70R: The pattern is very similar to the TKC but more aggressive, this is one serious tyre and lasts incredibly well. It still has some grip in the wet unlike the TKC which is bloody lethel in the rain or damp tarmac. Eats up almost all types of riding apart from really sloppy mud. This really is a great 'Duel Sport' tyre.

Fitting: Front was easy, the rear was pretty hard, very hard sidewalls.

Continental TKC 80

Horrible horrible horrible! IMHO the worst tyre available for any any kind of duel sport.
After 2 weeks in Spain riding varied terrain and tarmac this has to be the most useless tyre set unless you are on tarmac only, its bone dry and 25 deg C / 77deg F +++

I'm really struggling with which tires to fit for next season. I like my rear Pirelli scorpion rally - very very good everywhere including Tarmac but it doesn't last and it's not cheap. I'm doing my best to avoid the Michelin desert for the reasons you stated and I'm also trying to avoid the Dunlop d908rr for the same reasons. I ran a Pirelli MX Hard up front and it was fabulous off road but downright deadly on Tarmac and my SE does not get trailered to the trails - it hits the Tarmac to get there and back. Been investigating the Mitas e12 as I've heard mixed reviews of the e09/e10 but good stuff about the e12 - my issue is that there is only one distributor for Mitas in Canada and he's an absolute rapist when it comes to prices plus he hasn't imported the e12; wish I could find a uk source for Mitas who would be willing to find economical shipping to me in Canada... As for a front tire, I'm at a loss at the moment - I run the Pirelli XCMH on my 530 and I love it, maybe I'll try that on the big girl. I refuse to run tires that are outstanding on pavement because I love having the traction and control I need when I'm riding the dirty stuff so it's challenging...

Funny isn't it I have a hate hate relationship with Pirelli Scrop Rally tyre. They hate me and i have them  Even on the 2smoke and 450 every time I fitted them regretted it. Wonder if its just the type of mud we have here....

I run Maxiss M7305 for rough riding, likewise ride to the trail and back, they last pretty ok and are alright on the tarmac. Just they were too aggressive for the morocco ride. Also the Maxxis MaxxCross. Cheap and very good imho.

If you can find a courier for the mitas from uk to CA ship it to mine and I will forward it on, might even get out of duty that way...

My next tyres have turned up, should get round to fitting them in feb :( more road based...

I've only ever used the rear and only on my 950SE. On my 530, I've run the Michelin s12 p, Pirelli mt21, MotoZ tractionator I/T and Pirelli XCMH (that XCMH being my favourite). I'm at a loss for what to run up front on my 950SE to replace my widowmaker MX Hard...

Resurrecting the thread.

I have recently fitted a KC60 front with a Mefo Super explorer rear since I'm riding the bike as a daily ride these days. Well I must say that for tarmac I was pleasantly surprised, both very good on tarmac even at top speeds and both in wet and dry.
They seem to wear well too
